‘To live and witness all the love
All the love that we can find
We can finally rise above
Above the prisons in our minds…’
All Shot on location in California with German Director of Photography, Marco Schott.
‘Walls’ was a collaboration with the amazing young German DP, Marco Schott, whom wanted to build up his reel, JR Richards (phenomenal artist) and myself. The concept that I initially wanted to use for ‘Walls’ and that was predominantly based on ‘double exposure’. However, after ‘True Detective’ was released, everything was double exposure. So after shooting a complete day in a studio with the green screen, and 3 days on location and calling it a ‘wrap’… I had to rethink the complete structure of the film.
We had already shot in the desert, we had a warehouse scene where we had shot one pass at JR singing the complete song, we shot on location in California by the beach, but I was basing the film around double exposure and incorporating many more images within JR singing with the green screen…
I scrapped that idea and went with the footage we had (with only one pass at JR singing the complete song… what?!? ) No time to shoot anymore. So we kept it simple with the brilliant and vibey footage that Marco shot and incorporated real family 8mm footage, which I felt has completely right as the song was inspired by JR’s father.
We used a GoPro on a drone to shoot the aerial shots. We managed to pretty much crash it every time, but it survived! Ha, there’s great BTS footage there!
We only shot with one Sony FS700 and shot a lot at 240fps to capture the feelings and mood.
As Director and editor, it’s like putting together a puzzle that you know there are all the pieces… sometimes it’s super challenging, but in the end, it’s a huge sense of achievement.
